Take It Slant
Tell all the Truth but tell it slant —
Success in Circuit lies
—Emily Dickinson
When we observe the world, we are usually standing or sitting upright, perpendicular to the horizon, our line of vision parallel to the ground. Photography often follows suit: its default norm is a mid-space horizon parallel to the bottom of the photo. Our vestibular balance system encourages this perspective. It has practical benefits, yet it limits our visual appreciation of the world.
Take it Slant resists the dominance of this perpendicular perspective by exploring alternative ways of seeing. In black and white, free from the distractions of color, through landscapes and urbanscapes, organics and inorganics, Take it Slant distills the power of diverse angles and forms to evoke our affective engagement with our visual environment.
